Child with surprised expression crouches, holding an empty ice cream cone, looking at dropped scoop on a brick path. Bright, warm lighting.

Romans 8:28

"And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.”

“Nothing seems to be going my way! What am I doing wrong? I can’t seem to handle the simplest thing! It looks like I’m having ‘one of those days’ for three weeks straight! I hope no one is watching!” Guess what? Someone’s always watching!

Sound familiar? Does that voice in your head sound remarkably like your own? If it does, welcome to the “Club.” This “Club” doesn’t have an exclusive membership. They’ll let anybody in! Unlike what Groucho Marx once quipped: “I wouldn’t belong to a club that would let someone like me be a member!” You’re not the only one who has had “off” days. But sometimes those days are so far “off” that it’s hard to imagine they’ll ever be “on” again.

Life on this planet seems to adhere to its own agenda, not ours. “Wait! What?” Our life is moving along pretty smoothly when “Wham!” something causes the kite string that’s holding it all together to snap! We don’t know how or why it happened. We’re too busy trying to snatch back the frayed end swiftly disappearing out of reach. Likewise, today’s world is swiftly spinning out of control, and we’re “busy getting dizzy” from the carnival ride. None of these reactions move us any closer to a calm and controlled life. Why is that? Quite probably because we’re overreacting to things we can never control!

Mr. Isaac Newton defined the laws of motion, helping us understand why things move in a particular manner within our physical realm.

·      Law 1: An object will not change its motion unless a force acts on it.

·      Law 2: An object is equal to its mass times acceleration.

·   Law 3: When two objects interact, they apply forces of equal magnitude and opposite direction to each other.

Fact! The movement within our lives will never be constant or unvarying. We get into trouble when we refuse to believe that simple fact. This is when old Isaac’s laws become enforced.

·      Law 1: In this life, we walk a composed but somewhat lively path up until our dearest friend dies. Application: We are not immortal!

·      Law 2: The quicker we try to speed through our journey, the less we seem to accomplish. Application: Haste makes waste. “The hurrieder I go, the behinder I get!” Quote: Maria Hutsko-Vitalle, my Mom.

·      Law 3: Some people we interact with seem to thwart any progress in our lives. Application: The concepts of boundaries and compatibility need to be observed.

Thank God, our Father in Heaven doesn’t have to obey Man’s laws. Sorry, Isaac! (But tell your brother I still love his cookies!) When we recognize God’s will, we dimly see His purpose for us. As the picture becomes clearer, we will realize the good He had planned for us all along. Sometimes, His plan takes years, decades longer than we expect. Sometimes, His purpose crystalizes instantly. Either way, His Word says that “all things” are orchestrated and choreographed for our benefit. Not “some things.” Not “most things.” “All” things work together for good! Like a beautiful ballet composed by Il Maestro, we must constantly watch and listen for His purpose.

God has a reason for us, calling us to be put into action. So, my friends, our lives need to remain flexible and adaptable. We need to go with His flow! (This next thing is important.) We need to be ready and willing to stay obedient to His will. He’s got enough dead bulls and dove fillets from past sacrifices. Fact! All He wants is our obedience.

Application: When people ask you how you’re doing, you can answer, “This is the best day of my life!” Then you can tell them why!

I don’t know what you’ve heard, but the truth is... "And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28
