A newborn baby sleeps innocently in a crib.

Psalm 8:2

"Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger."

Author's note: The following meditations are drawn from the heart of David's prayers in the Psalms. They have been gently paraphrased to help you reflect more deeply on God's Word and His unchanging character.

O Lord, Your Word helps our limited minds glimpse who You are. You are our Creator, our Provider, and more. You are our Healer, our Protector, and more. You are our Guide, our Teacher, and more. But these are only a few of the facets we can identify. Whatever we think You can do, however, is to confess the beautiful limits of our own imagination.; whoever we believe You are, Abba, You are more! You are God, as our Father.

·       Is there anything in the world more helpless than a newborn baby? There is nothing it can do for itself. And yet, You have proclaimed a power in these innocents that reflects Your purity and goodness. The enemy can do nothing at the sight of this display but stand slack-jawed with respect for Your might. As Your children, Father, our weakness unleashes Your power.

When I look to the heavens, Father, I worship You with a smiling face. I imagine the booming Word You spoke that targeted the planets and stars to their homes in the heavens. Who cannot distinguish the order of the cosmos commanded by Your voice? Only those who explain it as chance!

Who are we, Lord, that among all the magnificence of creation, You exhibited a depth of love none can match? What have we done to deserve it? A much better question is: Why me, Lord? What have I done to deserve it? Is it because You’ve purposely set me in a place of glory and honor in Your kingdom? Is it because You’re pleased with Your creation? Or is it simply because I bring You joy, Father, when I recognize who I am becoming in Your Son, Jesus? Does that make sense? Did I get that right?

You designed the Earth before we even got here, Lord. You wanted everything ready for us before we were put in charge. Then You threw us the “keys to the kingdom” and told us to take care of the place. I cannot imagine that humanity held sway over everything on this “pale blue dot” called Earth. But that was Your original plan, wasn’t it, Lord?

You gave us control over all living creatures, dominion over every beast that walks the dry land. They provided nourishment to sustain us and warmth from their skins. They labored at our command and even gave us unwavering companionship.

Magnificent creations of flight inspired us to break the bonds of gravity. Even creatures that journey the ocean’s currents provide sustenance, sport, and inspiration for design.

O Lord, You did all of this for me. Unbelievable! Lord, You have many magnificent names. The World addresses You by them all. But, as your child, I am happiest, the most complete with… Father.
