Lion and mouse face each other on green grass. The lion looks surprised, and the mouse stands confidently in bright sunlight.

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." A journey with Psalm 23:4

Confidence, reliance, and assurance share a common misconception: we often preface them with "self." This approach leads us astray. If we follow the world's guidance, we risk being pulled deeper into its chaos.

As children, we learned that shyness was undesirable. We felt pressure to appear bolder. Society admires heroes. They become legendary figures, and we desire to be looked up to. This admiration makes us dream of greatness.

However, we must beware of "false bravado." This mask of overconfidence is a flimsy facade. It is fragile, waiting to be tested. Choosing this path often leads to self-deception and eventual trouble. True confidence is not built on the shaky ground of ego but rests on a more solid foundation.

Our libraries are full of guides on overcoming fear. Our auditoriums hold lectures promising the secrets to a bolder life. We absorb these dubious methods, often echoing the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz: “What makes the Hottentots so hot? What puts the ape in ape-ricot? Whatta they got that I ain’t got?” The answer seems to be courage.

In today's world, fears are multiplying. Each day, we encounter new anxieties. Listing them feels pointless as new worries arise daily, inflating our stress to the breaking point. The 'pop' is looming. Like the Lion, we seek solutions from “wizards” who provide empty offerings, only to benefit themselves.

What is the solution? It is the awareness that the Lion discovered. True courage was not absent; rather, it was a quality to be enacted through trust. This realization applies to us as well. Confidence exists without attaching "self" to it.

God's Word makes it clear: life's path will include trials. We will face daunting situations that cast shadows of anxiety. Doom seems to lurk behind every remote control click. However, remember that a shadow has no power in itself. It represents the absence of light, not the presence of danger.

Revisiting the the journey of Psalm 23:4 reveals an essential word: "through." We are not meant to linger and perish in the valley; we are meant to pass through it. Valleys are spaces where life thrives. The soil is rich, and the ground is fertile. In these challenging situations, God cultivates our character. He shapes us into people who rise above fears and fosters wisdom that can nourish others.

How do we navigate life's darkest moments—the grief, confusion, and anger towards heaven—and emerge fearlessly? Left alone, we cannot. This thinking tempts us toward despair. Before we dive into that abyss, let’s grasp God’s promises and clutch them tightly.

The answer lies in the unwavering presence of Jesus Christ. He promised to walk beside us. His steps will align with ours. His promises are eternal. The most crucial of these is that He will never leave or forsake us.

We are part of His beloved flock, and our Shepherd will safeguard us from dangers, even those disguised in refined suits. He will direct us around chaos and use the staff of His Word to guide us home, where we belong.

When we meditate on these truths and embrace them, our confidence flourishes. We learn to live not without struggles but to face them fearlessly, all within the safety of His promises.

Confidence regained allows us to navigate life’s journey with grace. We aren’t devoid of fear—rather, we learn to coexist with it while leaning on our faith. By trusting in God, we build an inner strength that allows us to confront adversities with assurance.

Thus, let’s remind ourselves of the promise found in Psalm 23:4. When we walk through the valleys of life, we have a guiding Light beside us. This is where our true confidence lies—not in self, but in Him.

We all seek wisdom to nourish our souls and the souls of others. When we hold fast to our faith, we embrace a life filled with courage and trust. It's all in the "Finer Print" below.

~ Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
