Woman in blue dress and straw hat sits in wheat field, holding a bowl of grains. Golden wheat surrounds her, creating a serene mood.

Luke 6:38

Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

The Problem:

“I barely have enough money to support myself and my family. I have to work two jobs to make ends meet.” This is the answer given by many people today when asked to help a fellow man, donate to a charity, or contribute to victims of a natural disaster. Their hearts might be in the right place, but their bank accounts suffer from the old Italian sickness, “maffundsalo (my funds are low!).” They become single-minded in attending to their own physical needs and daily activities. They have little time for anything besides keeping their head above water and running the “rat race.” (Some say the rats are winning!) It's heartbreaking that they feel compelled to compare themselves to vermin! And like the rats, they live in constant need. Needlessly! Explanation to follow.

Then you have the greedy people. Those “tight of fist” folks who spend every waking moment trying to gain more, by any method, from whoever is foolish enough to be cheated out of it. Ah, well. Their loss! Emblazoned proudly on their family crest: “What’s mine is mine, what’s yours is mine (in Latin).” (They’re so stingy, they don’t even “pay” attention.) Avarice is not listed as one of the Seven Deadly Sins because it’s cute and cuddly. It spreads cancerous lesions to the souls and spirits of both victim and perpetrator. These types of people completely miss the mark of divine economics, either because they were never aware of the principle or because they chose to completely ignore it.

There is vast wealth in the world. At the top end, almost 9% of adults in the United States are millionaires, while 11.5% of the U.S. population is in abject poverty. It has been hypothesized that if 100% of the world’s wealth were confiscated and then redistributed equally to every man, woman, and child, the wealthy individuals before would rise to prosperity again, and the previously poor would descend back into poverty. In this world, money holds the power of life and death. Herein lies the real pandemic of the world! And this is how the enemy likes it to be! Overheard at the Gates of Hell: “Stealing, killing, and destroying is hard work, but I love every minute of it!”

The Promise:

But God doesn’t want it to be this way. To combat the enemy, God gives us guaranteed solutions throughout His autobiography. The Bible is loaded with them! In this instance, He presents us with a magic formula: a miracle method that will cure the greedy and heal the apathetic. It doesn’t need to be injected, ingested, or topically applied. The directions for the prescription are uncomplicated. (Incidentally, God’s promises are all elementary. It's just one cause and one effect.) Here it is, are you ready? “Give more, get more. (Or get more by giving more.)”  It works either way!

It’s simple. The more generous we are, the more we’ll be given to be generous again. Consider it our investment in God’s blessings and grace. However, we are a crucial component in this formula and must take the initial action, the first step. We must be the first to be open-handed. "Untie your purse strings" and commit to what His Word advises. (Yes, the Creator of the Universe is giving us advice. Hmmm… should we take it? Duh!) He tells us to give and immediately tells us that He’ll reward us for sharing. That’s like God saying to us, “Go ahead, make My day. Try it one time; see what happens.” You can trust Him, folks. He won't bankrupt us. On the contrary, he wants us to be filled with joy!

In addition, God chooses to quantify the blessings we receive from following His advice. The more you put in, the more you get out. Hmmm… (again.) He certifies that we’ll collect every last ounce of reward owed to us for our obedience. Our blessings will overflow into our laps. That’s a promise!

Think about it! I want blessings in abundance. I want to use it to help others out of the “rat race” back into the human race where they belong. I’d love the emotional and spiritual richness God promises us. Be anxious for nothing, He tells us, back away from the cliff! His assurances are made available daily by reading and obeying His Word in “The Finer Print.” I've written about it before: "Charity equals prosperity."
