Psalm 9:5

 You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked;

You have blotted out their name forever and ever.~

A hand checks names on a parchment scroll using a quill, surrounded by coins and a cross. Warm lighting creates a medieval vibe.

Author's note: The following meditations are drawn from the heart of David's prayers in the Psalms. They have been gently paraphrased to help you reflect more deeply on God's Word and His unchanging character.

You never cease to surprise me with Your works, Father. Just when I thought I’d seen it all, Your creation presents a spectacle: by day, the burst of colors of a New England autumn, and by night, a meteor show of the Pleiades. God's wonders abound. Others see these things and marvel at the “natural world.” I tell them they need to open their hearts and applaud the Author.

But I’m still overjoyed daily by Your non-stop care for humanity.  You are the Alpha and the Omega. That one statement gives enough inspiration to songwriters to write a thousand sweet melodies. So, Man tries to express Your magnificence using different techniques, but they usually fall way short of Your true glory. The finite can never fully grasp the infinite... for now.

There are times when I believe You rescued me, Lord, from those who were set against me. Even while I was unaware of their presence, You sent angelic guardians who frustrated their schemes to harm me.

Because of my love for Your Son, Father, You’ve shown me Your Fatherly love. YAHWEH, this is Your way: ultimate justice for all, even for a son of Adam, a sinner, saved by grace.

I read in Your Word that there were nations in David’s day who foolishly declared war against You. What were they thinking, and where are they now? They exist no more, not even in the faded parchments of history. These countries have been plucked from our collective memories like prickly weeds discarded in a bonfire.

But You, Oh Lord, remain today, tomorrow, and forever. You preside from Your heavenly throne, administering justice impartial and absolute. The last court will be in session. True justice will then be upon us. You, Lord, are the Ultimate Authority, and You’ll preside over Man’s trial. Only one case will be written on that docket: Creator v. created! Order in the Court! Until then, when persecution and abuse thrive, You provide a safe harbor, a sanctuary for the weary, an oasis for the oppressed.

We, Your adopted children of Your kingdom, know You won’t abandon us. Our faith binds us together, and you planned never to let us live a life alone. You promised in Your Word that You’ll never leave or forsake us. Does anyone out there need further proof?

I continue to praise Your name, Father. I recognize Israel as Your first love and pray for their safety. I  tell others of Your incredible acts and plans, Lord. But in this world, deaf ears abound. Nevertheless, according to Your mandate, Abba, it’s my duty to plant the seeds of Your love in every soil. Father, You alone know the range of their fertility.

We ask for mercy, Lord. Show us compassion, Father. Remove us from the arena of the unrighteous, as You have done on so many occasions. Keep us out of harm’s way. When You issue Your infallible justice, Lord, You’ll hear the cries of our distress. You’ll see us in the mix and exclude us from Your vengeance.

I wish that the proclamation of my praise could be announced in Your holy city, Jerusalem. Your love before I knew You leaves me breathless in wonder. That’s just one wonder in which I rejoice!

Today’s world has situated itself in an abyss of its design. Their strategies are vain wisps of ether drifting beside Your Diamond Master plan. Your fame rests in Your unending glory and equity, Lord. Those who set their feet against You will slip and fall into their filth. Take a second to ponder that .

Those who ignore Your existence seal their fate along their myopic road. Destruction and death are just destinies. Those in the darkness of deficit will be moved into the light of Your fullness, Lord. Safely, they are alive and well and living in Your glory.

Take action, Lord! When is Your justice going to become evident to the world? How long will this take, Father? Man’s defiance and denial of who You are cannot continue much longer. I hope I’ll be around when “every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that You are Lord.” That’ll be the day!

Shake them, Father! Rattle their cages and make them realize their frailty. Still, they stubbornly choose to cling to their cruel identity, this mal du jour.  I remember the words of Jesus, the Christ: “Nevertheless, Your will, Abba.” Thine, not mine; Thee, not me! Take a lot more seconds to ponder that.
