A bearded man in a toga sits on a throne among clouds, laughing. Cosmic background with planets and stars conveys a mythical mood.

Psalm 2:4

"He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision."

Author's note: The following meditations are drawn from the heart of David's prayers in the Psalms. They have been gently paraphrased to help you reflect more deeply on God's Word and His unchanging character.

Lord, I’m puzzled by today’s political posturing for wealth, power, and influence. Today's leaders have no idea that their plans are in vain. Ultimately, they have no power to control anything other than bringing chaos and unrest to a very weary world. Alliances are formed, and strategies are developed to control men's lives, issuing fear and pain and shackling the mind and body.

But their opposition extends beyond mere humanity to include the Creator Father and the Redeemer Son. They want to bring it all down! They possess an excess of self-confidence. The word is “hubris.”

They have this particular attribute in abundance, while shame is swiftly becoming lost to the ages. Their biggest mistake is believing God brings bondage or subjugation instead of freedom through His grace. Some call this “spiritual insanity.”

"To a graceless neck, the yoke of Christ is intolerable, but to the saved sinner, it is easy and light."

Charles Spurgeon

·       In their efforts, humanity must be making You laugh, Father. I’m sure You’re constantly stifling a snicker at Man’s impotence, failing to grasp his genuine fragility in the universe. What power does the Earth have over Heaven?

The laughter of the Father, however, has no joy in it - only a sense of sadness that humankind has engulfed itself within itself. Man has created a pathetic shield against his Creator. What does he think he’ll accomplish? Do You show anger and disapproval of what humanity has done with his limited time on Earth? No, You don't, Lord. You show Him grace and mercy. But a time is surely coming when Your fierce wrath will be unleashed and fill them with terror.

Because of free will, personal choices based on an imperfect self can only produce imperfect results. You sent Jesus, the Christ, to reconcile the disastrous consequences of mankind’s choices and bring things back into balance.

You spoke of Your plan to appoint Your Son as the King of the Earth, who will be established in Jerusalem. Earth is the birthright of Jesus; it’s His heritage. Your perfect plan, Lord, redeemed all humanity with Your Son’s blood on Calvary over two thousand years ago. Jesus has irreversibly paid the fine for every sin of Man. The Price was Right for that sacrificial transaction.

Any opposition to the Lord in the Last Days will be met with ultimate destruction. You have put these criminals on notice: “Lawbreakers, beware! Be warned! Justice is swift! And final!” Serving the Lord and relinquishing our will for His must be foremost on our daily agenda.

“Show honor to my Son, Jesus, and all will be well, people. Otherwise, things will get ugly.” Your destruction is guaranteed! (Sorry. Too subtle?)”

But I need Your protection, Oh Lord. I need Your love and guidance to fulfill Your incredible plan for me. By preserving this attitude of dependence I have on You, I receive abundant favor and tailor-fitted blessings that cannot be counted. You even wrote it down in Your Word so I could memorize Your promise.

When You laugh again, Lord, I pray that any laughter from Heaven would be filled with joy, not derision, as I pour out my love and devotion to Your Son, Jesus.
